Can two tokens share a square in Ludo?
It depends on whose tokens they are and where they land. Classic Ludo has a simple answer, but variants like Parcheesi, Uckers, Mensch ärgere Dich nicht and Fia each handle shared squares in their own way. Here is how it works on this site.
Your own tokens can share a square
In Classic Ludo, two or more of your own tokens can sit on the same square. They do not block anyone and they do not hurt each other. Doubling up can even be useful: on a later turn you can move whichever of the two tokens fits your roll better. The same is true in Quick Ludo, Team Ludo and Pachisi.
Landing on an enemy usually means a capture
Enemy tokens are a different story. If your token lands by exact count on a normal track square that holds a single enemy token, you do not share the square - you capture it. The enemy token goes straight back to its yard and has to start its whole trip again.
Safe squares are the exception
Classic Ludo has 8 safe squares: the 4 colored start squares and the 4 star squares. No capture can happen there, so tokens from different players simply sit on the square together. A safe square can get quite crowded late in a game, and that is completely legal.
Variants with their own sharing rules
Several variants on this site treat shared squares differently:
- Parcheesi: two of your own tokens on one square form a blockade. No token from any player - not even your own other tokens - may land on that square or pass it.
- Uckers: stacking two or more of your own tokens builds a barrier that enemy tokens can neither land on nor pass. In the 4-player partnership game, a barrier never blocks your partner.
- Mensch ärgere Dich nicht and Fia: no stacking at all. You cannot even place two of your own tokens on the same square.

What are safe squares in Ludo?
Safe squares are track squares where tokens can never be captured. Classic Ludo has 8 of them: the 4 colored start squares and 4 star squares. Pachisi has 12 safe castles, Uckers protects only the start squares, and Mensch ärgere Dich nicht and Fia have none at all.
How does capturing work in Ludo?
You capture in Ludo by landing your token, by exact count, on a square that holds a single enemy token. The captured token returns to its owner's yard and must start over. Captures cannot happen on safe squares or inside home columns.
What is Uckers?
Uckers is a tough Ludo variant that grew up in the British Royal Navy, where it has been played aboard ships for generations. It is played with two dice, solo or in the traditional 2v2 partnership. Its trademark rule is the barrier: stack two or more of your own pieces on one square and enemy pieces cannot land on or pass them. Only the doorstep start squares are safe.
