How do you play Ludo?

Ludo takes about five minutes to learn. Here is everything you need for your first game of Classic Ludo, in the order it comes up at the table.

Quick answer: Each player races four tokens around the board. You need a six to leave your yard, and every six earns an extra roll. Land exactly on a lone enemy token to send it back. The first player to bring all four tokens home wins.

The board and the goal

Classic Ludo is played on a cross-shaped board with a main track of 52 squares. Each player has four tokens that start in their corner yard. The goal is to move all four tokens once around the track, up your private home column, and onto the home triangle. The first player to get all four home wins.

A turn, step by step

  1. Roll the die.
  2. If you roll a six, you may move a token out of your yard onto your start square. Only a six can do this.
  3. Otherwise, move one of your tokens forward by the number rolled.
  4. A six always gives you an extra roll, but three sixes in a row ends your turn.
  5. If your token lands exactly on a square holding a single enemy token, that token is captured and goes back to its yard.

Finishing a token

After a full lap, each token turns into your home column. The column is private, so enemies can never follow you in or capture you there. Landing on the home triangle needs an exact roll. If your roll is too big, that token stays put and you move a different one. More on this in what is the home column.
