What is Classic Ludo?

When people say 'Ludo' with no other words attached, they mean Classic Ludo. It is the rule set most of the world grew up with, and it is the starting point that every other variant on this site changes in some way.

Quick answer: Classic Ludo is the traditional version of the game, played on a cross-shaped board with a 52-square track. Each player races four tokens from their yard, around the board and up their home column. It is the version you can play free on the Ludo.now homepage.

The rules of Classic Ludo

  • Four tokens per player start in the yard; you need a six to bring one out.
  • Rolling a six earns an extra roll - but three sixes in a row ends your turn.
  • The track has 52 squares with 8 safe squares (4 start + 4 star).
  • Landing exactly on a single enemy token captures it back to its yard.
  • Your home column is private, and the home triangle needs an exact roll.
  • If you have no legal move, your turn is skipped automatically.
  • The first player with all four tokens home wins.

Why Classic is the standard

Classic Ludo took its modern form in England in the 1890s as a simplified, dice-based version of the much older Indian game Pachisi. Its balance of luck and choice made it a household game across Britain, India, Africa and beyond. Every other variant here is best understood as Classic Ludo with a few rules swapped - the rules hub lays them all out side by side.
